At least seven persons were killed and one injured when a jeep carrying a marriage party fell into a deep gorge in Pithoragarh district on Monday afternoon. The condition of the lone injured is stated to be stable.
Superintendent of police (SP) Pithoragarh Roshan Lal Sharma told that the jeep with eight persons fell into a 200-metre deep gorge in Bachkot area of Kanalichina block of Uttarakhand.
“The passengers were on their way to attend a marriage function nearby,” he said.
After the accident, locals started the rescue operation and informed the local police.
Only two men were pulled out alive from the vehicle, while the rest of the six persons were found dead, police said.
One of the injured succumbed in Pithoragarh District Hospital.
The bodies have been sent for post mortem examination, the SP said.
The exact reason behind the accident was not clear yet, the police officer said. “It is a narrow and steep road from where the vehicle fell into the gorge. Prima facie it appears that the driver lost control over the vehicle at a turn,” he added.
