National Green Tribunal (NGT) in its much awaited judgment over setting up of beach camps near Ganges in the stretch from Kaudiyala to Rishikesh has allowed 25 beach campsites . The camps have to be set up outside 100 meters from the middle of the river to either sides. The beach camp operators are considering the order a big blow to their venture. The case was filed by environment activist Vikrant Tongad two years ago against the unregulated and arbitrary camping activities on the river stretch.
Since then, camping has been put on hold on the stretch. He had alleged that the camps were polluting the river, badly affecting the wildlife and the whole ecology of the area with unrestricted flow of sewage and debris, felling of trees to set up camps, noise with loud music, pollution with generator sets and vehicular movement on the road in the vicinity in carrying the tourists andIt was on NGT’s direction, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) had conducted a study and found 33 beach sites out of total 56 recommended by the state government to be feasible for camping activities in the given stretch.
