Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s crippling blows, upfront and at ‘death’ during his five for 19, and the Afghan duo’s brilliant comeback after expensive first overs, sealed a five -run win for the defending champions despite Manan Vohra’s brilliant 95 (50b, 9×4, 6×5). It was their third win in IPL X at this venue and it couldn’t have come at a better time to bolster their confidence after two away defeats to Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sunrisers struggled for momentum on a wicket that aided slower bowlers and but for the 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Warner (54b, 7×4, 6×2) and Naman Ojha (34; 20b, 4×2, 6×1) they wouldn’t have posted 159 for six after being put in.
Warner was the pivot on which the Sunrisers’ batting revolved with Shikhar Dhawan, Moises Henriques and Yuvraj Singh – the last two off successive deliveries to Axar Patel – falling in trying to get a move-on after the Kings XI’s trio of Sandeep Sharma, Ishant Sharma and Mohit Sharma – the pick of their bowlers -stifled them.
