
On Tuesday, Premnagar police have arrested one Pradeep Singh Rawat under 60/72 Excise Act and seized 5.5 cartons of India made foreign liquors valued at around Rs 50, 000 in the market, from his procession. The accused will be sent to Suddhowala jail after being produced in the court, said Premnagar police officer.
Election approaching nearer, Dehradun district excise department is on a proactive mode, trying all means to stop smuggling of liquor from States like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Since the enforcement of model code of conduct, the district excise department has seized 9809.98 litres of liquors and lodged 90 FIRs under appropriate sections of Excise Act in the district. The seized booze is worth around Rs 32 lakh in the market. Dehradun police have also launched a drive against the booze smuggling menace to hook the electorate. Additional police forces have been pressed into service too to conduct checking drives at various places, including inter-state borders and inter-district borders falling in the district. Dehradun senior superintendent of police Sweety Aggarwal said that since enforcement of MCC, 185 cases have been registered with 7588 bottles of country made liquors and Indian made foreign liquor and 72 bottles of beer and 478 litres of country liquor being seized and 195 persons involved in such activities being sent to jail after being produced in the court.
